Psychotherapist, Energy Practitioner & Creator of Restoring Balance

I’m Cathy McCarney, a psychotherapist and energy practitioner, and I’ve been working with people for over 25 years.

My work has always been about creating a space where people feel heard, understood and accepted for who they are. Over the years, my understanding of therapy has continued to evolve, as I’ve come to recognise that lasting change can involve much more than working with our thoughts and emotions alone.

My journey

My own experiences have shaped the way I work today.

I understand what it is like to experience anxiety, self-doubt and the feeling that you should somehow be coping better. I also know that finding a way through these experiences isn't always about trying harder or simply changing the way you think.

For me, it has been a journey of discovering greater self-belief, resilience and a deeper understanding of myself. It was through this journey that I became increasingly interested in the relationship between the mind, the body and our energy, and how these different aspects of ourselves influence the way we experience life.

This became an important part of my own personal and professional development.

How my work has evolved

My professional background is rooted in psychotherapy, psychology and working therapeutically with people. Alongside this, my own exploration led me towards meditation, Qigong, energy and breathwork and other approaches that offered a different understanding of wellbeing.

Over time, I began to see how these different perspectives could work together.

Sometimes we can understand something in our mind, yet still feel it in our body. We may know that we are safe, yet our nervous system continues to respond as though something is wrong. We may understand where our anxiety comes from, but still find ourselves caught in familiar patterns.

This is where I believe working with the whole person can make a difference.

The way I work today

This understanding is at the heart of Restoring Balance — my integrative approach to anxiety therapy.

It works with the whole person, bringing together different therapeutic approaches that work with the body, nervous system and energy system together, recognising that each can influence the others.

The intention isn't to fix what feels broken, but to create the right conditions for change to unfold naturally. By working gently with the mind, body and energy together, we can begin to understand what is happening beneath the surface, support the nervous system to settle, and create space for new ways of responding.

I believe therapy should be a process that respects your individuality, your experiences and your own pace. There is no one approach that fits everyone, so I adapt the work to you and what you need.

What matters to me

At the heart of my work is the belief that there is more to you than your anxiety, your stress or the difficulties you are experiencing right now.

You don't need to become someone different. Sometimes the journey is about reconnecting with the parts of yourself that have become lost beneath stress, fear, expectations or simply the demands of everyday life.

As greater balance begins to return, you can start to feel more grounded, more connected to yourself and more able to meet life with confidence and resilience.

For me, this is what meaningful therapeutic change is about — not simply feeling better for a while, but gradually developing a deeper sense of balance that you can carry with you into everyday life.

A little about working with me

My approach is warm, compassionate and carefully paced. I offer a space where you can be yourself without judgement, while gently exploring the thoughts, emotions and experiences that may be keeping you stuck.

We work together, rather than following a rigid formula. Sometimes the work may be more focused on understanding your thoughts and patterns; at other times, we may pay more attention to what you are experiencing in your body, your nervous system or your energy.

Everything is guided by what feels appropriate for you.
